The Second Shooter’s Perspective | An Insight by Ben

Two years ago, we were high up in the mountains of Wyoming when Lyndsey began talking to me about her dream of starting and building a photography business. While I knew my adventure-loving wife was more than capable of making this dream a reality and passionate about achieving this goal, I, myself, did not quite know what to expect or what my role in all of this would be! Over the first year after the “launch,” I got to joyfully watch Lyndsey grow in her skill and craft primarily from the sidelines. My role then was encourager, advice giver, and hype-man. I LOVED seeing my bride use her giftings that had been buried for a while and I loved seeing and hearing about her interactions and relationships with her clients. Lyndsey is definitely a people-person. She is made and wired to serve and love others. Her photography has allowed her to do just that on a very unique, intentional, and individual level.

Fast-forward to last August. We are almost exactly one year into this adventure when on the way back from an engagement shoot that I tagged along on (mainly to hold gear and switch out lenses), Lyndsey turns to me and asks if I’d like to shoot with her… When she asked, I didn’t know how to respond at first. Part of me was saying “GO FOR IT,” while hesitancy and doubt also crept in. How could I shoot with Lyndsey? What do I know about photography? What possibly could I bring to the table that Lyndsey isn't already bringing??

Unsure of what it would mean or look like, my response was, “I’m in this with you. Let’s do it. ”

As with much in life, the long journey starts with one step. Over the past year, I’ve been able to second shoot with Lyndsey at a number of weddings and various couple and bridal sessions. Step by step, I’ve learned and grown in MY knowledge as a photographer and even discovered some skills I didn’t even know I had! As a second photographer, my job is to get the moments and angles that often go unnoticed. It gives me the responsibility to capture the entire timeline of the day with Lyndsey and the freedom to seek out some of the details that can be forgotten or passed by too quickly. A perfect example of this is the time I spend with the Groom and groomsmen. While the Bride steals the show and attention on the big day (and rightfully so!), the Groom and his best guys have a sincere connection on the day as well and it’s an honor to capture their interactions. I’ve been able to do two things that I love: work hand-in-hand with Lyndsey & encounter some awesome people. For those of you that don’t know, I’m a teacher. My days revolve around the interactions and relationships I’m able to build with my students in the classroom. It is the best job ever. With that being said, this photography business has allowed me to incorporate the most important element that I love from teaching,

Relationships.

Lyndsey and I truly take the time to get to know our clients. We want to know your story. Each of our couples is so unique and different in their own ways. We want to capture that for you and know your vision for your big day. It really is awesome when clients end up feeling like friends. Through it all, it is an absolute privilege to be chosen as your photographers and we don’t take that role lightly. It’s a heavy responsibility and we lean into that weight to provide a beautiful experience to our clients. If we were willing to take this giant leap to pursue our dream, will you take a leap to have an authentic, intentional, and occasionally humorous, duo to capture your unique story? We’d love to hear from you and have you leap with us.

Lyndsey also uses me to hang things, to figure out how to maneuver ladders, and I’d say that’s pretty valuable too.
