I think engagement sessions may be one of my favorite sessions. EVER. We start with lots of planning ahead of time. When I chat with couples about their session, I get to know who they are before shooting! Everything about their portraits should exude THEM so we pick a location that fits their relationship, whether it’s an urban feel for their love of architecture or a rocky terrain leading to a waterfall for the adventurous spirits. Location is so much more than a pretty backdrop: it tells a story about who this couple is and what they enjoy.

or make yourself right at home with a champagne toast for the classiest of couples

or walk right outside your apartment to the train station & shoot in the darkness of night because it’s completely unique to your story as a couple

Once the planning is set & the engagement session date rolls around, we get to have the real fun: we get to capture YOU. We get to step into a vulnerable place with you and capture your love story. How do we do this? We don’t point a camera at your face as say “okay, now look like you’re having the best day of your life.” (yes, I’ve experienced this from a photographer. cringeeeeee) We facilitate connection between ALL of our couples by engaging in conversation. We ask questions and encourage our couples to dialogue with one another. Whether it’s reminiscing on the proposal story, chatting about their weirdest quirks, or dreaming about how many kids they’d like, we ask ALL the questions because we truly desire authentic sessions that allow our couples to connect. It’s so fun! Want to see what I mean?

Do you want to know what inspires these smiles? Their own conversations! Not a “look this way and laugh”. Not a “Okay, look like you’re having so much fun”. Not a “smile at each other!” It was something that she whispered to him. It was a surprising response by him. It was all them.

And the same goes for the unprompted intimate moments of connection that only true comfortability can prompt.

Even in the midst of the authentic connection, we also have some fun with one of the most important details: that ring!

Your session is not a reflection of us as your photographers, but instead, a reflection of the couple. If you’re a goofy and lighthearted couple, you’ll see all of your fun personality as a couple reflected in your session. If you’re lovers of deep conversation and intimacy, you better believe you’ll see the tenderness of your care for one another reflected in your portraits. It’s our drive to capture YOU and not a caricature of someone or something that you’re not. Each of our sessions look different because each of our couples are so so unique.
